Step-by-Step: Mixing Brackish Water

This process must be done in a separate container, like a clean, designated 5-gallon bucket—never directly in the mudskipper’s tank with the fish inside.

1. Dechlorinate the Fresh Water: Start with a bucket of regular tap water. You must add an aquarium water conditioner (sodium thiosulfate base) to remove chlorine and chloramines, which are toxic to all fish.

2. Add Marine Salt: You must use synthetic marine salt (specifically designed for marine reef aquariums). It contains essential minerals and buffers beyond just sodium chloride. Do not use freshwater salt, table salt, or "aquarium salt."

3. Mix Thoroughly: Add the appropriate amount of salt (following the marine salt’s instructions for low salinity). Stir vigorously until you cannot see any salt crystals on the bottom.

4. Measure and Adjust (The Tools): Use your chosen tool to verify the salinity. The ideal range is a Specific Gravity (SG) of 1.005 to 1.015.
